Judge in Abrego Garcia v. Noem grants 7 day extension on discovery

On April 23, 2025, Judge Paula Xinis granted the government's motion for a 7 day stay in the discovery process in the matter of Abrego Garcia v. Trump. The order came just one day after the Judge had ordered that the government had to respond to all outstanding discovery requests by 6:00 PM on April 23, 2025.

The order imposing the 6 PM deadline came 9 days after the court ordered expedited discovery begin on April 15th. The government previously had denied all requests for discovery documents from the lawyers representing Kilma Abrego-Garcia, objecting to the that discovery requests on a variety of grounds, the majority of which the judge overruled.

The 7 day stay came after a sealed motion from the government was filed on April 23, 2025 asked for it. At the time of this writing, the contents of the sealed motion are not public information.
